Maternity Photos in a Greenhouse

[TL;DR: If you’re looking for maternity photos in a greenhouse, this session at East Pine Plant Shop in Maine is the perfect example of why greenhouse sessions are so special, especially in the middle of winter! The warm light, abundant greenery, and cozy indoor space make it possible to capture natural, relaxed maternity photos even when it’s freezing outside. This maternity session combined pregnancy photos with sweet family moments, and the greenhouse setting created the dreamiest backdrop for celebrating baby number four. ]

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you already know how much it means to me when I get to photograph the same family again and again. There is honestly nothing better. I photographed these two way back when they were planning their wedding, and now here we are celebrating their FOURTH pregnancy. Fourth. I cannot even handle it. I can’t wait to find out if baby is a girl or boy when they arrive!

Watching a family grow in real time is one of the biggest privileges and honors of this job. I’ve seen them as newly engaged, then new parents, then parents of two, then three wild little boys, and now we’re getting ready to welcome baby number four. It just feels super special to be trusted with all of those moments.

This maternity session felt extra fun because it wasn’t just a maternity session, it was also a little bit of a family session mixed in. And if you know anything about photographing three little boys, you know the energy level is approximately 1,000 at all times! But honestly? That’s part of what makes it so good. The chaos, the cuddles, the running around, the “okay everyone just hug mom at the same time” moments are the things that make the photos feel real.

We did this session inside the greenhouse at East Pine Plant Shop, which I am still completely obsessed with. I’ve done one session there before, but when we walked in this time they had rearranged some of the furniture and added the coziest little couch and I immediately fell in love all over again. It somehow felt even more like a jungle than the last time!

Also, let’s talk about the fact that it is the middle of winter in Maine right now. We’re in that period of time where mother nature can’t decide if it wants to be warm or cold. This particular day definitely had a chill in the air, and a fresh layer of snow on the ground. Then you step inside the greenhouse and it’s warm, humid, bright, and full of plants everywhere. It honestly feels like you’ve teleported somewhere tropical. I will never not love that contrast.

Emily looked absolutely incredible (four pregnancies and still glowing like that?? make it make sense), and the boys were exactly what you’d expect – climbing on the couch, hugging Emily’s belly, climbing all over Nick, and just generally being the happiest little chaos crew. I love sessions like this because it doesn’t feel stiff or overly posed. It just feels like a snapshot of what this season of life actually looks like for them right now.

One of my favorite things about this family is how relaxed they are in front of the camera at this point. When you’ve worked with someone for years, there’s just this level of comfort that makes everything easier. We talk, we laugh, the boys do their thing, and somehow in the middle of all of that we end up with the sweetest, most natural photos. That’s always the goal!

I also just love the idea of celebrating a fourth pregnancy this intentionally. By the time baby number four comes along, life is busy. Really busy. And it would be so easy to skip photos and say “we’ve done this before.” But every baby deserves to be celebrated. Every pregnancy deserves to be documented. And I’m so, so glad they chose to do this session.

I had the hardest time narrowing down the photos for this blog because there are so many little moments I love – the boys hugging her belly, the quiet shots of just the two of them, the cozy couch photos, the way the light was coming through the greenhouse walls it was just one of those sessions where everything felt easy and warm and happy.

So here you have it – a maternity photos in a greenhouse in the middle of winter that somehow feels like summer, three wild little boys, one very loved baby on the way, and a family that I’ve had the privilege of photographing for years now. Honestly, sessions like this are why I love what I do SO much!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.
