About five or so years ago, I decided I wanted to stop buying books. My shelves were overflowing, and I definitely had a book-buying problem. So, I wanted to make a commitment to getting books from the library only and IF I couldn’t find a book I was searching for then I would buy a used copy to have.
I’ve done pretty damn good all these years. But last year, I started reading a bunch of non-fiction books. They’re not what I’d call “self – help” books, but just the type of book that makes you want to live a better life. I like to call them “life-giving” books. It didn’t take me long to realize that I was going to have to make an exception to my rule.
If there’s a book I want to read, that I know I’m going to want to highlight in, I’ll buy a used copy. I ran into this issue last year early on that I would check out a book and be so bummed that it wasn’t mine to keep so I couldn’t write in it.
Well, I recently started reading Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport and it’s been mind-blowing. I’ve always really loved having boundaries with my social media. But this book just really takes it to a new level. What I love the most about this book is that it’s NOT anti-technology. It’s not even anti social media. It’s anti-wasting-your-time-on-things-that-don’t-matter.
I really love how Cal Newport dives deep into the psychology behind why we behave the way we do when we get technology in our hands. I’m SO excited to dive in deep and do the digital detox that he talks about in the book.
What I also love about this book is that it gives tangible, practical tips and habits to break and form so that you can live a more meaningful life. Everything about it is so fascinating and it’s really started to shift my whole philosophy surround technology.
I think every human being on this planet can benefit from reading Digital Minimalism. It’s just so much more than the do-this, do-that kind of book. The amount of research he has done to support his theories and strategies are really cool for my little nerdy heart!
To be honest, I thought that when I read this book I wouldn’t get much out of it because I was already “so good” with my technology. But I quickly realized I’m not actually that good with it, and there’s still so much more I can do! I highly recommend this book!!
