For those of you who follow me on facebook know that I had my first experience with weddings last weekend. My best friend finally got married to the love of her life, but the wedding ended up being on short notice so I did photos of her getting ready until her photographer arrived. So, here are the ten things I learned on that day, and since then.
#1. Wedding dresses are WAY harder to photograph than they look.
#2. It is mind boggling how someone else’s flash at the ceremony or reception can completely destroy a photo. I stayed out the photographer’s way – Melissa Curran Photography – as soon as she arrived, but at the reception I took a few photos just off to the side. I had my camera on continuous shutter the few times I took it out, and each time, at least two photos were destroyed by the harsh blue flash from someone else.
#3. Bringing a list of “must-have” shots was super helpful. It also helped ease my mind that I wouldn’t forget anything!
#4. After posting a photo of mine for feedback in the Photography Awesomesauce Winter Photo Challenge on facebook, I learned that you can buy a beautiful hanger to bring with you so that you don’t have to have the cheap-o plastic hangers in photos with such a beautiful dress! I totally plan on making this purchase within the next week.
#5. There are SO many fun little details you can take photos of.
#6. It takes a ton of patience to be a wedding photographer, because naturally, all the friends and family want those same photos.
#7. For me, taking photos of the cake was easier than I anticipated.
#8. Think outside of the box when it comes to taking photos of the bride getting her hair and make-up done. I didn’t want to have a bunch of photos that were exactly the same, thus the photo at the top of this post! Which, I would like to add, I am SO proud of! 🙂 (and looks much sharper when you’ve clicked on the image)
#9. The simpler the better, when it comes to photos. Having too much stuff all jammed into one can really turn you off to a photo.
#10. Don’t be afraid to take charge during photo time when it comes to being the wedding photographer, despite the competition. After all, you are the one the bride and groom are paying to capture their incredibly special day!
Overall, I am very pleased with my first attempt at wedding photography, and I cannot wait to keep learning! 2013 is going to be such a fabulous year. I am second shooting at three weddings, and am the primary shooter at six! I’m so excited to share my progress with you as the year goes on 🙂
