I figured today that I would share three reasons why photographers should invest in their lenses, instead of camera bodies. Don’t get me wrong, camera bodies are great, but they should not be your priority unless you are making the switch to a full-frame or a different brand.
#1. You will still use the same lenses you have now in ten years.
The technology behind lenses is not going to change much, if at all over the years. Whereas camera bodies are always being upgraded, even though the technology is still pretty much the same from each upgrade.
#2. Your camera is only as good as the glass you put on it.
Glass refers to the lens. Your lenses are what helps produce sharp images, and what can help you define your style. Lenses are also what enable photographers to shoot in low-light situations.
#3. The value of a lens stays the same, used or brand new.
Whereas, the life of a camera body can be much shorter than a lens, and therefore will decrease in value as soon as you start to use it (which is why you always see people asking about shutter counts when they are looking at used bodies!).
I hope that these help shed some light on why lenses are the true investment! I know that I have my sights set on various lenses, not camera bodies. That is where my gear envy lies 😉
