Wedding photography often (rightfully) focuses on the bride. Her dress, her hair, her flowers – these details are iconic and deserve to be captured beautifully. But what about the groom? Often, his details get overlooked, or there aren’t a lot of details gathered ahead of time because if we are being honest – men think differently about these kinds of things, haha. However, photographing the groom’s details is just as important in telling the complete story of your wedding day. So, I thought it would be fun today to do a blog post that highlights why the groom’s wedding details matter, and what details a groom should have ready on the wedding day to be photographed!
Why the groom’s wedding details matter:
- It completes the narrative: A wedding is about two people coming together. Including the groom’s details adds depth and balance to the wedding album. It shows the unique style and personality of both partners! By capturing both the bride’s and groom’s details, wedding photographers create a more cohesive and comprehensive narrative of the wedding day. It showcases the unity and partnership of the couple.
- Preserves memories: Just like the bride, the groom puts thought and effort into his attire and accessories. These details become cherished memories, reminding him of the special day for years to come.
- Highlights individuality: Each groom’s style is unique. Whether it’s a custom-made suit, a vintage watch, or sentimental cufflinks, these details reveal his personality and add a personal touch to the wedding album. I absolutely love seeing the unique details a groom will bring on his wedding day and hearing about why they’re so meaningful!
- Adds visual interest: Groom details, often with their textures and intricate designs, can add visual interest to the wedding gallery + album! They often provide a contrast to the soft, romantic images of the bride.
What details to have ready on the wedding day:
- The suit/tuxedo (this one is usually a pretty easy to have on hand 😉 )
- The shoes – I’ve seen so many different types of shoes that suit a groom’s style on a wedding day. It’s so fun!
- The watch
- The cufflinks
- The tie/bowtie
- The boutonniere:
- The socks – usually these are included when they are a super fun pair of socks (meaning, not just black socks)
- Personalized items: Any personalized items, like engraved flasks, custom pins, family heirlooms, or groomsmen gifts should be included as well!

As much as wedding photographers love bridal details, we love the groom’s details just as much! Especially when we get a chance to have more than shoes and a boutonniere ready to go to be photographed 🙂 Don’t let the groom’s wedding details be an afterthought. Your wedding day is about both of you, and it’s important to showcase the details that make each of you unique individually as you come together as one!
