It wasn’t until the end of this past wedding season that I got to experience a couple of weddings that had uplighting, and I found out really quickly that I LOVE it! After talking with other photographers, I realized that a LOT of photographers actually like it when their wedding receptions have solid uplighting.
When you hire a DJ for your wedding, a lot of companies will also offer different lighting services depending on what your vision is for your special day! Uplighting is simply when your DJ (or whoever you are working with for your lighting) places lights all around the room that are stationary on the floor, and they point upwards against the wall or beam that they’re placed by.
When this is done well, it provides a lot of really nice ambient light to the room. The colors can also be personalized to your wedding for all of the formal events, and then can change colors throughout the night while dancing. These lights are different from the moving lights that are usually set up after all the formal dances and events have been completed at the reception.
Below are some examples of the lighting at a couple of wedding receptions I photographed this past year. It creates a really nice feel in the background of your photos instead of it being all dark! I honestly think that I get my best reception photos from the receptions that are lit up well! If you’re still planning your wedding and haven’t considered uplighting – I encourage you to do some research and see if you think it’d be a good fit for your vision! Your photos will be even better because of it!
