Why I Wouldn’t Hire a “Natural Light Only” Wedding Photographer
When people start looking for a wedding photographer, one of the first things they’re drawn to is “natural light.” And I TOTALLY get it. Natural light is beautiful. It’s soft, romantic, and it photographs so well. I don’t know of a single photographer who doesn’t love natural light – I know I do!
Natural light is the kind of light most of us picture when we imagine our wedding photos. But here’s the thing I’ve learned after years of photographing weddings: Your wedding day doesn’t stay in that kind of light for very long.
What “Natural Light Only” Really Means
A natural light wedding photographer is someone who doesn’t use flash or any kind of artificial lighting. They rely completely on whatever light is already there. And sometimes, that works really well.
For outdoor ceremonies. During golden hour portraits. When you’re in bright getting ready spaces with big windows. Those moments? They’re super dreamy!
But a full wedding day is so much more than that, and it requires more than just natural light.
Weddings Don’t Happen in Perfect Lighting
There are so many parts of a wedding day that don’t get talked about when it comes to wedding photography lighting.
Ceremonies run late. Cloud cover rolls in out of nowhere. Reception spaces are usually darker than you expect (on purpose -it’s part of the atmosphere). And then there’s everything that happens after the sun goes down (because a surprising amount of the wedding day happens in the dark or super low lighting).
First dances. Toasts. The absolute chaos (in the best way) of the dance floor. Some of the most meaningful, emotional, and fun parts of the day happen in low light. And you don’t get to pause those moments until the lighting is better.

The Truth About Flash Wedding Photography
I think flash wedding photography gets a bad reputation. A lot of people picture harsh, direct light or photos that feel stiff and unnatural. And to be fair, that can happen when it’s not used well. I know this used to be my perception of flash photography, and then I learned. Once you know better, you can do better.
But when it is used well? You probably wouldn’t even think twice about it. Flash, for me, isn’t about changing the moment. It’s about being able to capture it no matter what the lighting looks like.
It allows me to: Keep skin tones consistent; Freeze motion (especially during dancing); Handle dark reception lighting without losing quality; take super fun “extra” photos in the dark; and honestly, just not miss things that matter.
It’s not about replacing natural light. It’s about not being limited when natural light disappears.

What You’re Actually Hiring For in a Wedding Photographer
This is the part that I think matters most. When you hire a wedding photographer, you’re not just hiring a style. You’re trusting someone to document a day that you don’t get to redo.
And that day isn’t controlled. It’s unpredictable, emotional, fast-moving, and honestly a little chaotic at times. The goal isn’t just to take beautiful photos when everything lines up perfectly. It’s to create a gallery that feels consistent and true to your day. From the quiet moments in the morning to the last song of the night.
A Gentle Thing to Pay Attention To
If you’re in the process of looking for a wedding photographer, this is something worth asking about.
Not in a “gotcha” kind of way – just with curiosity. How do they handle low light wedding photography? Do they use flash when they need to? What do their full reception galleries look like?
Because Instagram and portfolios are full of golden hour. But your wedding day will be SO much more than that.

Final Thoughts on Natural Light vs Flash Wedding Photography
Natural light will always be something I love. It’s a huge part of how I shoot. It’s definitely my favorite. But it’s not something I rely on. I’ve spend several years learning and honing my skills around off camera flash, so that I can create beautiful images for my couples. Because the number of times I’ve been in a getting ready room with no windows is actually insane, hahah.
Your wedding deserves to be documented fully. Not just the parts that happen in perfect conditions.

FAQ Section
Do wedding photographers use flash?
Yes! Many professional wedding photographers use flash, especially during receptions and low-light situations. It helps maintain consistent, high-quality images when natural light is not available. Several photographers also love using flash to create some fun dramatic images as a bonus for the wedding gallery!
Is natural light photography better for weddings?
Natural light photography is beautiful, especially for portraits and ceremonies. However, it is not always reliable for full-day coverage, especially during evening receptions or indoor events.
Will flash ruin the look of my wedding photos?
Nope! When used correctly, flash enhances image quality. Professional photographers use it in a way that looks natural, balanced, and flattering.
