How to use Pinterest for your Wedding

I’m not even sure Pinterest existed back when I got married. Maybe it had just gotten started, because I remember photographing weddings the following year that were big on Pinterest themes. Pinterest is a powerful search engine, but when it comes to planning your wedding, it needs to be used wisely. So, I wanted to share a quick note today on how to use Pinterest for your wedding!

Steph and Wally were married at The Oceanview in Nahant in MA for their elegant summer wedding by the water!

First and foremost, it needs to be used for inspiration. You should not go into your wedding day expecting it to look just like something you saw on Pinterest. Let me say that again:

You should not go into your wedding day expecting it to look just like something you saw on Pinterest.

More often than not, what you’re seeing on these boards aren’t actual weddings. They’re styled shoots that had a very specific vision in mind and then were executed on a small scale.

You want your wedding to reflect who you are as a couple. It should feel like you. So, what do we do then?

  1. You go crazy pinning all the wedding things you can find on Pinterest. Pin anything that strikes your fancy.
  2. Then you analyze. Look for themes and patterns you find across the pins. Were there certain colors, textures, patterns? Were you drawn to open and bright spaces, or more rustic or modern or moody? If you look closely enough you’ll start to see trends emerging. This can help give you a direction in planning the visual details of your wedding!
  3. Bring these trends that you’ve figured out to your vendors. And then let them do the rest. They’ll come up with ideas based on what you’ve told them and then you can fine tune them from there.

This is a pretty simplified version of how to use Pinterest to plan your wedding, but simple is better, haha. If you stick to using it as a guide, you’ll end up with a wedding that is true to you, unique, and will probably still be Pinterest-worthy 😉

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
