How “He” and “I” became “We.”

We are often asked how we met our significant other, and I always get a big smile on my face when I think about me and Steven came to be. It’s an interesting story 🙂 One that I feel like sharing with you all today!

I use to work for a company called Branches, and I helped adults with disabilities become more independent in their daily lives. It was such a rewarding field to work in. Well, one time the company houses went to an apple orchard to go apple picking. There are several houses in this company and each worker is assigned a house. I saw this guy with SUPER curly hair that I had never seen before and found out he was shadowing that day. I forgot about him after that day. As work went on, my co-workers would talk about this guy Steven and how awesome he seemed to be with the guys he worked with, and I eventually saw him again at a staff meeting. But that was it.

You know how the guy always comes along right when you really don’t want a boyfriend? Well, that’s what happened to me. I was hell-bent on not having a guy in my life until I graduated, moved to Australia and came back! Yikes.

In January, we both ended up at the same CRMA training. I just want to preface this by saying that I hardly showered over those three days, I wore sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a baseball cap each day. I was just there to become certified and move on. I wasn’t interested in making friends! I had definitely noticed Steven during this training, mainly because of his laugh! It is such an amazing laugh and just full of life, and it makes me smile just thinking about it! About a week later, his best friend Mykayla was working at my house and casually mentioned that Steven thought I was cute (I found out later on that this was a planned mention). So I friended him on facebook, because how else are you going to meet people!? :p And plus, I didn’t quite believe her. After all, I hadn’t showered! I had no idea what he even saw in me that day. It turns out that he and Mykayla were writing notes back and forth during the training, and he had written “She’s cute.” on an alcohol swab package. That little package is now in our wedding album 🙂

It’s a little blurry, because it’s in a sleeve, but this is the first page of our wedding scrapbook. There’s that little alcohol swab!

He accepted my friend request, and started to chat with me on a Monday night. That same night, at like 11pm, we decided we were going to hang out! We met up at McDonald’s where I also worked. I figured I’d leave my car there, and I’d be back within a few hours at the absolute most. Boy, was I wrong! We just drove around in his car for hours and just talked. We went all the way to Bar Harbor at 2am and just walked Sand Beach – in the middle of winter. It was amazing. We went out to eat at Denny’s and we watched the sunrise from the top of the parking garage. I will never forget the look I caught him giving me when I was looking out the window. By the time I got back to my car at 7am, I knew I was in for it. I decided that even if we were just friends that I would be the happiest girl on earth. We hung out again on that Wednesday in the middle of a snowstorm (again, alll night), talked some more, and had a snowball fight. By the next time we hung out on that Sunday (and a car ride on Friday in which we hypothetically talked about if we liked each other – which, HELLO, we did!) night, I was done for. He was it for me, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else.

It was as if we had known each other for years already.

Three weeks later he said “I love you,” for the first time.

Three-ish months after that, we were engaged, and four months later we were married!

There are so many more little details about things he said, or did, or the looks I saw about that first week we knew each other, but I’m sure that would bore you all :p Instead, I just keep those for my heart and I think back on those days all the time. Amazingly so, I am even MORE head over heels for him than I was almost three years ago!

Does anyone else have some stories they’d like to share about how they met their significant other?? 🙂

I also think my boyfriend and my story is pretty dang cute.

Basically, it was my first semester in college and I was dating this guy who lived out of state. It was pretty serious, promise ring and all. I got a job working at my school’s library as a student assistant and I worked almost every night, 4-8. In walks this guy who is 6’5″, shaggy brown hair, and scruff. I handed him a number for a computer and went on with my life. However, he kept appearing at the library almost every night. One day he was there longer than I was, and another, he came in three separate times during my shift. The first thing I said to him was, “why don’t you just keep a damn number?” and he just laughed. The next thing I said to him was, “what, are you like, 6’5″ or something?” and he just replied, “pretty close”. Little did I know I was friends with his roommate and he kept telling his roommate how he thought I was cute.

So my boyfriend and I broke up and that was whatever. The spring semester starts and there he is, sitting at a table at breakfast all alone. I decided to sit with him, and my god, he was gross. He ate his bacon with a fork and didn’t have very nice manners at the table.

We’ve had breakfast together every day since, and it’s been almost two years.
