Good Reads | May 2019

It’s time for another round up of Good Reads today! I’ve kind of fallen behind in sharing about books I’ve been reading, but that’s okay! Grace, not perfection, right?!

Anyway, these two books I read were unlike any of the other books I typically read. They were BOTH about creating a home that is functional and life-giving!

The Life-Giving Home by Sally + Sarah Clarkson // This was a neat book to read because it sort of reaffirmed everything I love about having a home and not a house. It also really helped me think about how I can create this kind of atmosphere and environment no matter where I am! I also really like that this book was written from a faith-based standpoint. One thing this book did for me that I wasn’t expecting was giving me a brand new appreciation and outlook on my childhood home, and I think that’s actually super neat!

One of my favorite passages from this book says: We may not get to choose the story into which we are born, but we do get to choose what part we will play within it. Daily we have the creative choice to respond, to make, to give, to love. As the wizard Gandalf said to Frodo when Frodo wished he had not lived to see evil times, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Cozy, Minimalist Home by Myquillyn Smith // This book was really cool because it was more of an actual “how to” guide to having a cozy home that is also not overbearing! I’m excited for when we own our space again because I’m definitely going to check this book out from the library and follow all the steps when we redecorate! So many wonderful tips that are so practical and totally make sense! It was definitely an eye opener!

I love how in this book, she shares this definition of minimalism: “Minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts us from them.” At its heart, according to Joshua, minimalism isn’t about getting rid of stuff and doing without; it’s about focusing on the right stuff.

What do you think, would you read either of these books?!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
