Hiring An Accountant Was One of the Best Things I’ve Done

When we moved to Portland, that was when I decided to “get legit” for my business. I changed my business name, filed all the appropriate paperwork, and… I hired an accountant! I connected with Matt at a financial planning type of event and he gave a presentation and I really liked his demeanor and how knowledgeable he was.

Since then he’s done our taxes for both our family and my business and it’s given me such peace of mind! When I first started my business I heard a statistic that the IRS had hired on a significant number of auditors specifically for small business owners and I was so afraid of messing something up when filing my taxes. It’s a lot different to do this for your business than it is for your own personal taxes!

I love just handing off our binder and letting him and his team take care of the rest! However, last year was the first time we owed significant money and it took me by surprise. Even though my gross income had hardly changed, my NET income had increased quite a bit because I wasn’t spending as much money and that nailed us!

So this year, we met up a few weeks ago to go over our current financial state so that we could get a feel for where we will be at tax time this year. I didn’t want any surprises this time around! We had a really great meeting and now I feel totally prepared for what’s coming our way! I love my accountant! He’s incredibly smart, very accommodating and he’s super responsive. There are some weeks I’ll send him several e-mails trying to figure something out and he always does a really great job helping me out with that.

If you’re running a small business, and don’t have a background in tax laws, I would seriously think about getting an accountant to take care of all that for you each year! It’s such a weight off your shoulders and there’s WAY less likely to be mistakes! I have been getting into the idea of outsourcing what I can so that I have more time to focus on what matters, like my family. Our taxes is just one of these areas!

If you are looking for an accountant, I highly recommend Matt Barbour at McLeod|Ascanio 🙂

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
