What’s In a Brand?

We hear the word “brand” thrown around so much in the business world, and people are frequently re-launching a brand. But, what is a brand?

When I was a new photographer starting out, I thought a brand was just the logo and font and colors you chose. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! While those things definitely help elevate a brand and make it look cohesive and professional, that is not the only thing that matters.

A brand is what you stand for and represent. What are your ideals? What do you value? What are you bringing to the table? It’s about the experience that you create for your consumer, regardless of what industry or field you are in. A brand is a way for you create a connection with people who want to hire you for your services or buy your products.

For me and my business, I stand for marriage and family. I value those things so much more than the actual wedding day. I believe in a simple and unconventional life. I am able to provide priceless photographs to so many people to treasure for generations to come. My brand includes my daughter and my husband; my love for the ocean; my passion for printing my photos; and my obsession with Harry Potter and reading. These are all things that shine not only on my website and social media, but within the client experience I provide to all of my couples and families.

When you are starting out, really consider your brand before you launch. As my girl, Jenna Kutcher, says – “Build a brand, not a business.” You want something that will still work for you if you change direction in your business endeavors. I know that based on the brand I built, that if I stopped doing photography tomorrow, I’d still be able to relate and connect with the people who already follow and believe in me! I know you can do the same!
