I get it. I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit. As photographers, or any small business owner, it is super easy to be really hard on yourself and talk yourself into giving up and believing you are a failure.
Well, let me just tell you this – you are not a failure. Being a photographer, I have gone through several phases – usually when I haven’t had any new bookings or anything- of feeling like I am not good enough. That I could never compare. I should just stop doing what makes me happy. I still have those moments, but now I know better. I allow myself to have a pity-party for no more than a day. Maximum. After that, I wipe away the tears and push the negative thoughts out of my brain and just keep moving.
You’ll never get to where you want to be if you don’t keep trying. If it is something you truly want, don’t ever give up.
When you are a photographer experiencing some down time because things are slow, there are so many things that you can do to keep that passion alive and grow along the way.
- Figure out your “why.” Why do you love what you do? Are you in it for the right reasons?
- Set goals for the next few months of some things you want to be better about. Then make a plan to make it happen.
- Research! There are so many things that I still want to learn about and jump at the chance to learn new things!
- Practice, practice, and practice some more. No matter how many years you have been doing this, practicing always keeps you rejuvenated.
- Take photos of things you love- of your personal life, and talk about it!
- Build relationships with vendors and your clients. Also, build relationships with other photographers!
- Do some unadvertised free sessions so that you can look like you’re staying current, and you get another chance to practice.
- Brainstorm ways to make your client experience that much more amazing.
- Figure out what you want from your business.
I could go on and on. My point is, it’s super easy to give up. It’s not so easy to keep going and working to make your dream happen. But then, when are great things easy to get to? Sometimes the struggle, is what makes success even sweeter.
You can do this. And you will. You just need to believe it too 🙂
