Each time I pull into my parent’s driveway to visit, I get so excited and can hardly wait to jump out the door and run inside to hear my mom’s big hello when she sees the door open. They’ve always taken care of me and comforted me. They taught me so much, and truly helped shaped me to be the person that I am today. Just in case you needed proof, here is what my parents taught me.
- To eat dinner as a family.
- Pounding on the floor is a perfectly acceptable way to get someone’s attention.
- Having the music up loud lets you really feel it. They taught me how to appreciate music.
- What it means to not let a “disability” stop you from having a good life.
- How to drive well in the snow.
- There’s no such thing as just a quick stop to say hello at a friend’s house.
- They showed me what it means to be humble. To live a simple life. To appreciate what you have.
- How to share a room with someone and make it out alive.
- The art of camping and road-tripping.
- They taught me how to love. And how to be brave.
- They taught me what it really means to be in a marriage, through all the good times and all the bad times.
- You only get one option at dinner.
- How to play rummy.
- To appreciate the stars.
- To help others who need it.
- If it means something to me and is important, go and get it. There’s no reason a dream can’t be a reality.
- The value of education.
- To laugh.
- Find the good in the bad.
I think the most important thing they taught me was to never be ashamed of who I am and the life I lead. Without them, I am nothing.
