They came out into the living room where we were all playing, and they had the biggest smiles on their faces. “We have a surprise!” they had told us. From behind their backs, they pulled out glow in the dark stars for the two bedrooms that us four kids shared. Though, the girls room had glow in the dark dolphins, and I was pretty psyched about that.
We all immediately went into our respective rooms and started putting them up, figuring out the perfect places to put them on the walls (our ceilings weren’t flat, so they didn’t really stick well to that) and we waited for dark to see them shine.
- there is joy in the simple things.
- You don’t need to have all of the best and new things to have a happy childhood.
- They showed us the value in playing outside until it was dark.
- About supporting your kids interests by making endless trips to the public library, or getting yet another model to work on.
I am so beyond thankful for the simple life we had growing up, and I am grateful that I never had to worry about where my next meal was coming from, or if I was going to have a place to sleep that night. My parents worked hard to give us the best life that they could give us, and I know it wasn’t always easy for them.
I’ll never be able to fully express my gratitude to them for the childhood we had, but I’ll never stop trying.
