How to choose your getting ready room

The getting ready portion of the day is more than just getting photos of the actual prep! It’s also the time of the day when I photograph alll the details that make your day unique and true to you as a couple! This time of the day can really set the tone for the rest of the day, and I want to  help make sure that you’re getting off on the very best foot! So, I thought I’d share some things to keep in mind as you start the search for a space to get ready in!

  • You’ll need to decide if you plan to get ready at the venue, a hotel, or at a private residence. I know some people will rent an Air BnB these days for wedding day prep and those usually work out pretty great! Something you want to keep in mind is are there windows and how big is the space? If you have a big wedding party, it can be really hard to squeeze everyone into one hotel room! So, if you go the hotel route, try to get a suite or two adjoining rooms. That way one room can be kept clean for the photo part of “getting ready” and the other room can house everyone’s stuff! The extra expense will be so worth it, I promise!
  • Before deciding to get ready at the venue, make sure you see the prep room beforehand. Sometimes these bridal prep rooms have no windows and are actually quite small, whereas some others I’ve been in are absolutely stunning and spacious and have HUGE windows!! And sometimes, getting ready at the venue won’t actually leave you with enough time based on their availability, so be sure to check on that well in advance!
  • Get ready at the same space as your partner! When you’re both nearby it makes it sooo much easier to ensure that we can get photos of both sides getting ready!
  • The bigger the windows, the better! Natural light is the secret sauce for really clean, classic getting ready photos. All I need is ONE good window to create beautiful portraits!
  • Don’t worry about the little details. When I show up on a wedding day, I find the perfect spot to get photos of you getting into your dress or putting on your suit, and I’ll clean up all the extra things that would detract from the photo! I’ve been known to take photos off the wall, hide lamps behind tables, and move entire pieces of furniture! Anything to get a nice clean shot! 🙂

What do you think? Did I leave anything out! I hope that this was helpful as you start to plan all those little details for the day of the wedding!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
