Between the weddings that Becky and I shot together last year, I had a fair share of being a second shooter, and then a fair share of having a second shooter. Here are three ways to be a good second shooter throughout the wedding day. The lead photographer will appreciate it, I’m sure!

Becky being an awesome model for me while I was testing some settings before grabbing my couple!
#1. Act professional at all times.
You are an extension of their photography business, so don’t tarnish that by acting unprofessional, gossiping, or pulling out your cell phone during the day.
#2. Shoot opposite of the lead.
This is a really great way to ensure that there is a lot of variety in the photos! Be at a different angle than your lead, so if they’re in the aisle, try being off to the side. It’s also not a bad idea to shoot with a different lens than your lead is already shooting with.
#3. Try to catch the candids during formal parts of the day.
Becky always did an amazing job of catching the candid photos of the guests or the wedding party while I was doing the formal photos after the ceremony.
It’s always really important that before the wedding day, you have a conversation with the photographer you are working with about what their expectations are of you. That way no is surprised, and the day can go really smoothly!
