The Power of Introverts

It’s odd to tell people that I’m a photographer, was a high school teacher, and that I’m SUCH an introvert. Large social gatherings where I don’t know anybody make me incredibly anxious and uncomfortable, and I’m definitely not the kind of girl who shows up to these things and will be the one to start a conversation with someone.

However – when it comes to teaching or photographing sessions and weddings, I’m totally outgoing and everything that an introvert isn’t. But, when I come back from those things, I really need time where I don’t have to be “on.”

Over the years (mostly since knowing Steven) this has improved by a very slight margin, haha. It’s a personal thing that I’m always trying to work on because I want to be able to show up in a room full of people I don’t know and confidently start a conversation with someone without feeling like a fraud.

But, I’ve also learned that there’s power in being an introvert. I used to be somewhat embarrassed by it and viewed it as a weakness, but now I own it and view it as one of my strengths because I know that there are benefits to this side!

The biggest strength being: You can really pick up on what people are putting down. I find that I’m super aware of how people are feeling and that allows me to actually make really great connections with new people! As well as the people that I’m friends with as well! This is incredibly powerful because I find that in any kind of relationship it’s so important to be in tune with what the other person is feeling. I also find that introverts are also really great listeners, and who doesn’t love that?!

Anyway, the point of this blog post is to provide encouragement to all my fellow introverts out there – recognize that it can be a strength! Also, you’re definitely not alone. Can anyone else relate to the introvert/extrovert phenomenon I experience?!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
