Portland, Maine Wedding Photographer:: Workflow Series Part One – 10 Steps to Prepare for a Session :: Linda Barry Photography

I recently went through everything that I do in my business, and made it true to ME and what I hope to accomplish. In doing this, I set up several workflows to ensure that I was consistent throughout my business and my interactions – and to make sure I didn’t forget anything!  I plan on sharing some of these workflows with you over the next month or so!

The first one I wanted to share with you is pretty simple – it’s the 10 simple steps that I take to prepare for any of my sessions!

#1.  Put the client phone number in my phone. This is so important to me because a lot of the time, I haven’t met these clients in person yet, so it helps make sure that I get to the right person!

#2. D700 & D5000 batteries CHARGED and PACKED.

#3. Flash batteries CHARGED and PACKED. I don’t use my flash very often, so sometimes I can skip over this step if they are already charged and still packed if I didn’t use it during the last session.

#4. Pack business cards. NEVER go without business cards! You never know when an opportunity will present itself!

#5. Client wish list, if applicable. Sometimes clients have very specific shots in mind, so it’s important for me to remember what they are!

#6. Pack D5000 and lenses. My D5000 is now my backup, so this step is usually already complete!

#7. Pack D700 and lenses.

#8. FORMAT memory cards.

#9. PACK memory cards.

#10. Pack tripod. I don’t use this very often, but it can be handy to have!

Some extra steps that I take for a wedding are:

  • “bride” hanger
  • wedding emergency kit
  • laptop
  • water
  • granola bars
  • cash

If you are going to make a checklist to help you prepare for a session, write down EVERYTHING (and I mean EVERYTHING) that you do to prepare for that session. I love having it in a checklist, so that way I can physically check off that I haven’t forgotten anything! I also, always prepare the day before that way I’m not in a rush in the morning and forget something, despite the list!

  1. […] So today is part two of my workflow series that I started a while back. I created a bunch of workflow sheets for my business so that I don’t forget anything and so I remain consistent across the board! If you missed the first one, you can see it here. […]

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
