Portland, Maine Wedding Photographer :: 5 tips for creating a wedding album

I am not an expert in creating wedding albums. This is something that I just started doing this year, and I’ve definitely learned a lot through the process! Here are five tips to creating a wedding album.

#1. Export your photos right from Lightroom (or Photoshop) into an “album” folder.

This is so much easier than trying to look at all of the little thumbnails to pick out photos.

#2. You want the album to tell a story, so choose wisely.

When picking photos for an album, it can be pretty daunting. Keep in mind that it should tell a story and evoke emotion and memories. You don’t need to include every single little aspect of the day – just the important ones! For example, I choose about five or six of the girls getting ready, the guys getting ready; details spread throughout the album; several from the ceremony; several from the reception; five or six of the bride and groom (usually with one or two photos per page); and the bridal party formals and any special formals they specifically asked four. I typically have around 150 images in a wedding album.

#3. No more than four photos per page.

I only break this rule for reception photos. I will often have a couple of pages in the reception section of the album that has five images on it. These images are usually just everyone dancing – not any of the formal events at the reception.

#4. Try to keep the pages varied.

A lot of my pages have the same layout, but I try not to have the same layout three or four pages in a row. I think it provides a more pleasing visual experience.

#5. As much as possible, keep the pages of photos the same color.

It’s really hard to do this 100% of the time, but I try to keep pages all black and white, or all color, whenever I can!

I hope to someday update this post with more tips that may serve better use to new photographers! 🙂 If you have any of your own tips, feel free to share!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
