Earlier this year, my husband and I took our own photos for the very first time. It was a lot of fun, and not as difficult as I thought it would be! I cannot wait to do our photos again 🙂 This time we will take them in the winter! It’d be SO cool if we got some while it was snowing.
But anyway, here are five tips for taking your own photos!
#1. Tripod, tripod, tripod. I cannot stress enough how useful and important a tripod is to doing your own photos. It makes it much safer for your camera, and it’s easier to manipulate the angle your camera can take the photo at.
#2. Set a timer. This one should be pretty obvious. However, I found out that on my camera I could adjust the time on the timer. I adjusted it to ten seconds so that I had enough time to run over to Steven and get into the “pose” I wanted us to be in.
#3. Check each photo carefully. After a photo has been taken, zoom in on it and check it out to make sure it’s good! There’s nothing worse than getting home and realizing you spent all that time doing your own photos and none of them were sharp, looked good, etc. Be aware of cut-off limbs, messed up clothing, elastics, and so on.
#4. Know that you are limited to an extent. There are some photos that I would’ve loved to have gotten of me and Steven, but it just was not going to be possible with just a tripod. Maybe someday we’ll figure out a day, but going in knowing that it was not going to be the same as having a photographer that can manipulate a photo from essentially every angle really helped set me up for success and not being super hard on myself.
#5. Have fun! Especially if you are in a secluded area, you don’t have to worry about people watching you, or feeling self-conscious about what you are doing! Just like having fun in a regular session makes your photos look way more natural, it also does when doing your photos.
Also, making sure that everyone involved knows that it is important to you, and they are all there to be positive and make it happen, it will all turn out just fine! Taking your own photos can be challenging sometimes, but it is also very rewarding and so much fun to do – especially with people that you love!
