What I Love About Being a Photographer

It took me a long time before I would tell people that I was a photographer. I was worried I wasn’t professional enough for the longest time, and then I realized it came down to how I viewed myself and not necessarily what other people thought. Now, I’m happy and proud to tell people I’m a photographer, that this is how I’m earning a living. I always wanted to live an unconventional life, and I feel as though this is making that happen!

I do, however, also get a lot of questions about why I like photography, and why I shoot weddings and families, because that seems really stressful! It definitely is stressful sometimes, but overall, it’s pretty great! And, just like with teaching, I love the heart of what I do. There’s so much more to it than just taking pretty photos!

I know that the photos I take are priceless. Families have lost loved ones, and my photos are often the last ones they have of them. What a gift for these families to have!

I love that I get to provide new parents with photos of their kiddos that they’re going to look back on one day and say, “remember when?”

I love that the photos I give to my couples after their wedding are going to hang in their home, and someday they’ll tell stories to their children and grandchildren about one of the best days of their life.

It’s such an honor to be allowed into someone’s life over and over to document them as they grow and evolve! I don’t ever take that for granted and I leave every wedding and session feeling so grateful to have an opportunity to provide these photos for them!

I mostly love being a photographer because of what it means to the people I’m photographing.

Being a photographer is a talent I never knew I had, and the fact that I get to use it as a creative outlet and really challenge myself in new ways is a really neat experience. I love being a photographer because it’s something that keeps me on my toes, and it’s something I can always work at to get better and better. It doesn’t get old for me! The value it brings to my own life is limitless! I love having the skills to document Lily as she grows up, and to document all the adventures we have as a family!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
