We’ve been a couple for seven years and married for six and a half. I’ve realized recently that our life has not been consistent from one year to the next, and I don’t see it as a bad thing. It’s kind of fun to look back on! One of my favorite stories to tell people about the start of our relationship was that time Steven lived in a car.
Right before we celebrated our first wedding anniversary, I graduated from college and Steven and I moved out of Skowhegan. I had to complete a May-term after graduation to get my last science lab in at Farmington, and Steven was going to start going to school at NTI in Scarborough. It didn’t make sense to pay for an apartment when we would hardly be there, so we moved in to his parent’s house (in Central Maine) for that summer. But – for that May term I lived with a friend of mine in Wilton, while Steven…. lived in my Toyota Camry while he was going to school. He literally slept and lived in that car, and would go to the gym to shower.
Then, the next month I was working in Limestone at a science summer camp, and Steven was still.. living in the car in Southern Maine.
It wasn’t until I was done at the summer camp that I was staying with his parents, and Steven was coming home on the weekends. At the end of that summer, I landed a job as a chemistry teacher at Portland High School and we moved down to Portland.
Finally – we were a married couple who was actually living together again 🙂
We spent a fair amount of time apart that first year of marriage due to jobs and school, and it’s easy for me to forget about that time period. One day, Lily is going to look back on my blog and see this post and get a glimpse of what life was like for her parents as newlyweds, and whenever I tell this story to new friends, they think it’s so crazy!

I would just like to share that I did also have a tent. But it wasn’t very great in the rain, so I stayed in the Camry quite a bit because it rained a lot. I had it setup in the woods behind school, and I would generally park the car at a neighboring business lot so as to not be spotted by any teachers/students.
Oh that’s right! I totally forgot about that! haha.
