I feel rich today… and it has nothing to do with money

Our car’s battery had just died at an intersection, and after pushing it into a lot right off the road, we were walking back to our apartment to get our other car so we could drive back and jump the battery. The sun was shining and it wasn’t too cold, and I couldn’t help but smile – the whole way back. In fact, I’m still smiling.

I feel rich today, and it has nothing to do with money.

There are so many things that I could get hung up and be in a bad mood about – like the fact that one of our cars always seems to need work for it to run appropriately, or that high schoolers can be jerks, or that we are out of heating oil and we’re not entirely sure how we’re going to pay for it. I choose NOT to let those things take up any more space in my brain or my energy being upset or worried about. It is what it is, and we’ll get through it somehow.

Richness has nothing to do with the amount of money I do or do not have in my bank account.

It’s being able to look at my husband and have so many memories with him, and how I think he is just the sexiest guy ever and I can’t help but smile when I see him. Or when I hear his amazing laugh.

It’s being able to come home to our apartment and finally feel at peace with where I’m living. To feel truly happy and proud of where I live.

It’s being able to sit on my couch on a sunny, cool, Saturday and read a book with some hot chocolate.

Or being able to lay in bed with my sister and watch The Mistle-Tones on Netflix. (Best movie ever, by the way. But I’m also a sucker for musicals.)

It could even be that I’m starting a new business venture that will get me even closer to leading the unconventional life I so crave.

It’s all the little things that add up to the big things in my life. We have some food in the fridge, clothes in our closet, and blankets to keep us warm.

We have love, and we have joy.

So yes, I consider myself to be a very rich person. Because being rich to me is everything that I already have.

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
