Choosing a specialty :: Portland, Maine Wedding Photographer

wedding photographer, specializing in wedding photography

In 2013, I made a conscious decision that I was going to specialize in weddings, couples, and seniors. But, I’m focusing very heavily on shooting weddings. I think that this was one of the best decisions that I made as a business owner. Here are three reasons why:

#1. I’m doing what I LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Words cannot express how much I love weddings. By focusing on weddings, I literally get to do more of what I love.

#2. It transformed how I market myself.

Instead of being a photographer who shoots everything, I centered my blog, my website, and my facebook around the three areas I chose to specialize in. By doing this, I attract more of the sessions that I really enjoy shooting, and spend more time being happy about what I do 🙂

#3. I get to fine-tune my skills.

I’ve worked so hard over the past year to improve my wedding photography skills. It’s so awesome to try to master ONE set of skills for ONE specialty, instead of trying to master posing for newborns, how to work with big groups of people, making little kids smile all the time, and so on. Being able to focus on how to pose a bride so that she feels totally beautiful on her wedding day, or how to capture those tender moments between a newly married husband and wife, or how to use lighting at a reception to create some really awesome photos of the guests are going to be way more valuable to me, and way more fun. Not to mention, it makes me a much stronger wedding photographer.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that by choosing a specialization in photography, you are allowing yourself to be totally amazing at one or two different types, instead of being just average in a bunch of types of photography. It also helps you develop your photographic voice and style, as you get to do it consistently within one category.

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
