3 tips for working at your computer :: Portland, Maine Photographer

Working at a computer makes my eyes so tired, and eventually makes my back hurt. A lot of jobs these days require working at a computer for long stretches of time, especially as a photographer. I spend way more time looking at a computer screen than I’d like! However, a job is a job and must be done 🙂 I thought I’d share three tips that help me get through stretches of working at computer.

I found this on Pinterest when looking for a funny computer image! These are some great stretches to do on a stretch break!

#1. Posture.

I learned this during an education course in an undergraduate class. I remember this tip about posture so clearly that I often try to make sure I do it! It’s important to keep your legs at a 90 degree angle with the floor, and that you don’t cross your legs, or even sit on your legs. Sit back in your chair and make sure your back has support, and also so that you are not hunched over! This helps reduce any problem areas of pain that I experience – especially in my knees and back! It’s also important that your keyboard is at an appropriate height so that your wrists are not super curled over either.

#2. Blink.

Staring at a computer screen for a long time can be very taxing on your eyes. We don’t realize it, but we actually blink less when we are working at a computer so it makes our eyes dry and tired. Blinking a little extra does good things for the eyes. I also like to look away every now and then. At school, when I am doing a lot of work on the computer, I make it a habit to look out my window every now and then to give my eyes a break.

#3. Stretch breaks.

These save me when it comes to working on the computer. Every 20-30 minutes or so, I stand up and stretch. This just makes me feel SO much more comfortable for when I have to be sitting with good posture, staring at a screen for a long period of time.

It also never hurts to listen to some of your favorite music while pushing through a work day, and to also set time limits of how long you’ll work at a time! Listen to your body and take care of it 🙂

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
