When I look on social media, I see comments made daily about how there’s just not enough time in the day or in the world to get things done. I know I’ve fallen into that way of thinking sometimes and have said that from time to time.
Recently I read “168 Hours. You Have More Time Than You Think” by Laura Vanderkam, and it was really an eye-opening book. Now, this book isn’t a blueprint for how to manage your time better, but rather it walks you through a mindset shift. And it’s a really good one!
Instead of saying, “I don’t have time for that,” what if you started saying, “that’s not my priority”? It makes a HUGE difference! Every single person on this planet has the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and some people are absolutely killing it. They’re doing BIG things in their life, and to those on the outside, it’s easy to assume things about how they got there and to think we could never do that ourselves.
Why not? Why couldn’t we? We have the same amount of time.
The big difference comes down to how we think about our time.
One of the cool things about this book is that she encourages you to participate in different exercises, such as logging your time for one whole week. It’ll really force you to analyze what you’re doing with your time and if that’s helping you reach the goals you want to achieve. For example, how much Netflix are you watching every day? Is it two hours a day? That adds up to FOURTEEN hours a week. What could you be doing with that time if you reduced it by half? What if you had seven hours freed up to do something else? Chances are, if the thought of doing this activity is uncomfortable, then that means you’re probably not actually doing things with your time that you feel good about!
I really like how Laura Vanderkam shares the stories of so many real life, average people, so that we can hear about all the rad things they are doing with their time, and how they’re making it work.
168 hours is a lot of hours. You can still sleep 8 hours a night, work 50 hours a week, and still have a life you enjoy!
I highly, highly recommend this book!! Since reading it, it has made me super aware of my time and how I’m filling it. It’s also helping me keep my goal of living a fulfilling life front and center of my mind!
