Handling Client Inquiries

colby college, lorimer chapel, tips for photographers, how to handle client inquiries

I’ve only been doing this for three years now, but one thing I feel I have down pretty well is how to handle potential client inquiries. This will be short and sweet! I’ve always been pretty polite and upbeat in my e-mails, but when I saw Amanda Hedgepeth post a video earlier this year about being humble, well, I stepped it up a notch, and it’s paying off!

So, here are the two major things you should be doing when you respond to a wedding inquiry.

#1. Thank them.

Thank them for taking the time to look at your work and to reach out to you for more information. Yes, I know, some people are just price shopping, but you should treat all inquiries as if it’s a big deal that they contacted you – because it is! I ALWAYS thank whoever is inquiring for checking me out, because I know there are literally thousands of other photographers they could choose from.

#2. Congratulate them!

How un-excited (I think I just made that a word) would you be if you got an e-mail back from a potential photographer that didn’t even congratulate you on your newly engaged status?! I’d be deflated and not that psyched to continue with that photographer. I wanted someone who was just as excited as I am about getting married! So, make sure you congratulate them on their engagement, and their upcoming wedding!

I recently had a bride tell me – on her wedding day – that one of the major reasons that she chose me for her wedding out of all the Maine wedding photographers on wedding wire, was that when I responded I was excited, I CONGRATULATED them, and I THANKED them for getting in touch with me! If you aren’t already doing these things when you respond to client inquiries, I suggest you start to implement them!

You best believe my responses are full of exclamation points and smiley faces, because I truly am honored and excited that someone took five minutes of their day to reach out to me. How you make someone feel with your e-mails goes a LONG way and is noticed 🙂

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
