Getting burned by butter // The Barry Files

I can still feel the sting of tears in my eyes as I doubled over in laughter.

It all started with Steven wanting to make “the best chocolate chip cookies ever.” That’s literally what the recipe from the internet was titled! We were in our small one bedroom Skowhegan apartment (it was less than 600 square feet if I remember correctly) in our first year of marriage.

I don’t know what came over him, but he decided that he REALLY wanted homemade cookies, and that they needed to be the BEST. So, he began!

There’s something you should know about Steven – he’s a pretty relaxed, go with the flow kind of guy. But when it comes to projects or being in the kitchen – he is VERY meticulous. I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but it just might help paint this picture for you.

He gathered all the ingredients he needed to make these cookies and laid them all out on the counter as I watched from the futon as this whole process began to unfold. Since Steven is very meticulous, I knew we’d be here for a while 😉 Our apartment had a tendency to run very warm, so despite it being the middle of winter, Steven was only wearing shorts while he was on this baking quest.

One of the steps called for melting the butter, and so he carefully did. Here’s the best part of the story! The microwave was on top of our fridge, and it wasn’t exactly eye level either. Steven went to grab this bowl of butter from the microwave only to discover that the bowl was hot. Like, REALLY hot!

In this split second of realizing how hot the bowl was, he dropped it and in doing so proceeded to spill scalding hot butter ALL OVER his bare stomach. I know I’m terrible for this, but I started to laugh SO hard because he was basically doing the “oh my god this is hot” dance around the kitchen!

Eventually he was able to calm down and realize that thankfully he wasn’t truly burned, but damn if that doesn’t make for a good story! It was also during this baking episode that Steven used the wrong kind of parchment paper on the cookie sheet and managed to fill the apartment with smoke, thus setting off all the fire alarms, hahaha.

This is hands down one of my most favorite stories about Steven because not only was it actually kind of hilarious, but it reminds me of those sweet early days in our marriage!

What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you while baking?!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
