Portland, Maine Photographer :: Workin’ on my fitness!

It’s personal Monday here on the blog! Tonight I decided I would share what I do to try to stay healthy – and build up my stamina for wedding season!

This was taken from Pinterest! I would LOVE to be able to do this pose, but my yoga skills aren’t quite there yet!

I think one of the hardest parts about being truly healthy, and staying that way, is motivation! I’ve gone through fluctuations in my life where I will go through a period of time where I work out regularly, and eat pretty well. Then there are times where months will go by before I even set foot  in a gym, and I’ll eat a lot of junk.

About a year and a half ago, I made a pretty conscious decision to stop eating processed foods. In the beginning, I cut back, but I didn’t stop completely. Over the past few months or so, I’ve definitely made a significant reduction in how much processed food I would eat. I hardly eat it now! (Except for like, animal crackers and things like that) I was mainly targeting the meats and such. Then, for Christmas, we got a pasta press, which made it that much easier to cut out eating packaged spaghetti. We now make our pasta fresh pretty much every time! And it’s fabulous knowing exactly what goes into our pasta! There are just SO many things I want to make from scratch. But, there’s also so much I don’t know about nutrition. Now, I eat however I want to eat, but now I crave more of the healthier stuff (who knew!) now that I’ve been eating it more and more often. It’s fabulous.

It’s also really kind of neat to see the kind of impact that your eating habits can make on your body. Over my February break, we went to the Bangor area to visit family and friends, and we didn’t eat like we normally do – at all. We were eating a ton of sweets, and pre-prepared food, and I felt awful. I felt sluggish and gross! And all because we didn’t stick our normal eating pattern! Craziness. I never want to feel that way again!

Learning about nutrition is one of the top things I am focused on this year. That, and fitness. I really want to be healthy, and to me that means: being energized, being able to go for a run, and not feeling tired and nauseous all the time.  I’m slowly getting there!

Here are some things I do on a regular basis to keep feeling awesome:

– I make homemade meals from scratch. The only “fast food” I eat is Panera Bread (occasionally for their bread bowls!) and Tim Horton’s for something random here and there (mainly smoothies.)

– I avoid all things frozen or canned, as much as I possibly can.

– I LOVE doing these physical activities: Yoga – calm yoga and core yoga (SO relaxing, and it relieves so much tension and pain! I absolutely love it, and can’t wait to be more flexible); Piloxing (combination of boxing and piloxing! talk about a work-out!! I love it); Jillian Michael’s 30-day shred (for those days I can only fit in 30 minutes of exercise); rock climbing at the rock gym (SOON WE CAN CLIMB OUTDOORS!!!! It’s getting so warm!); and working out with my husband at the gym on campus.

– I sleep. On as much of a regular basis as possible.

– I really try to make things positive, and stress-free (which means having a clean and organized house!)

– I drink LOTS of water, and tea as much as I can.

What I really love about my workout “regimen” is that it really keeps things switched up so I’m not doing the same thing everyday. Also, four of those activities can be done from the comfort of my living room! 🙂 After a long day at school, I just want to come home and stay there. It’s nuts. 🙂

I’m very excited about working on understanding nutrition. This summer, me and Steven are going to participate in a CSA (community supported agriculture) so that we can have fresh, organic, foods, as well as support local business. I can’t wait! I have a feeling though that once we start, we’ll never go back – which isn’t a bad thing 🙂

Anyway, I love working towards being healthy. It can take a lot of self-discipline (you just have to DO IT!), but the results are so amazing. How I feel after working out or eating well is just so incredible! Once you get into a routine, it just becomes such a good habit. As the photo says: if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. Working out and eating healthy definitely challenges me, but I’m so looking forward to the positive changes it’ll bring to my life!

So, are you going to take the challenges that are put in front of you?

Also, do you have any suggestions for how I can stay healthy? I’m always looking for awesome resources!!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
