My first year as a bulldog

As most of you know, I did not go to school for photography. I went to school to be a science teacher! I was fortunate enough to land a part time teaching job at Portland High School in my own chemistry classroom. There were many pros to taking a part time position: it was in fact in my own classroom just three months after graduating with my degree; it allows me to continue working on my masters program with Capella University that I started over the summer; I was on the fence for quite a while about whether or not to teach right away or take a year off to pursue photography so it gives me the opportunity to decide if I want teach or not; and it still allows me to work on my photography business and I get health insurance 🙂

This experience so far has taught me so much about myself, and about education. I’m relieved to realize that I am in fact meant to be a teacher, and I still adore every second of it. It really pushes me to create that ideal classroom for myself and my students. Since teaching at this school, I’ve realized that if I can teach here, I can teach anywhere. The population of the school is so incredibly diverse, and we lack a lot of resources, as most schools do. This gives me the confidence that having a challenging first year will only help me in the long run 🙂 I hope to be able to continue teaching next year, but as a full time teacher.

It’s been interesting to experience the same amount of passion for science, teaching, and photography at the same time. Sometimes I think the universe is trying to see whether or not I can gracefully balance the two careers, while maintaining a life. Challenge accepted. 😀

Just a peek at my classroom (pardon the quality, it’s from my iPad!) 🙂

If you’re someone who has a lot of passions, don’t think you have to just choose one! You can do whatever you set your mind to! I am proof of that.

This is also my first post I’ve made on my iPad!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
