My first roll of film!

When I was in high school, I couldn’t take photography classes because it was always offered during band class. I was always so envious of my classmates who got to work in a REAL darkroom and develop film. But I also loved being a band geek and didn’t want to give it up! Eventually photography found it’s way into my life all on its own. I occasionally wonder what would’ve happened if I HAD taken those photo classes, but I know that my journey unfolded just as it was meant to be.

In 2015 a dear friend of mine introduced me to the world of shooting in film. I borrowed a camera from the school I worked at, bought some b+w film for the first time ever, and we spent an afternoon adventuring around a local college campus. It was the middle of October and it was so so fun. As I was shooting, everything was moving fine, but when it came time to wind it up when the roll was done, something wasn’t right.

I brought it back to school where a colleague put it in a box thingy and opened it up and could feel that the film never moved like the camera said (and sounded like it was) it was doing. So, a whole roll of film was gone and I was significantly bummed because I had so much fun!

But, I used the second roll of film and everything worked fine! We had planned to develop the film ourselves in a darkroom, but we never got around to it, and then I left teaching.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, in 2019, my new friends Lynne and Katherine were talking about film and I mentioned that I still had these two rolls of film that I’ve carried around with me from move to move, and I didn’t know what to do with them. They encouraged me to send them out and walked me through the process (which was SO easy! Thank you PhotoVision!) and I just got my very first film scans back yesterday and I’m SOOOO excited and totally re-energized about playing around with film! I still have so much to learn and to practice, but I’m excited to work on something new!

What about you? Have you ever photographed with film before?!

Here are some of my favorite scans from my first roll of film I shot almost FOUR years ago!!

  1. […] I shared a post recently that included the black and white film scans from my first roll of film I ever shot back in 2015. Getting those scans back from PhotoVision totally had me so excited to try again. I’m thankful that my friend Kat let me borrow her film camera, and I went off to Hunt’s to get some rolls of color film! I was excited to play around and see the difference between color and black and white! Well, I recently got my Spring color film scans back and I LOVE them! […]

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
