Tips for a Stress-Free Session

Photo sessions make everyone nervous. Except for maybe a professional model. But maybe even them! I’m a photographer for a living and I still get nervous when I have our family photos taken! But there’s a difference between being nervous and stressed for your session, so I want to share a few practical tips for you to take advantage of when it’s time for your own photo session!

York, Maine engagement session. Tips for a stress free photo session.

  1. Make sure you’re not hungry. Being hungry can make everything so much harder on yourself mentally and emotionally! So, be sure to eat a snack or even a meal before you have your photos taken. It can make a world of difference!
  2. Go to sleep early the night before. I know for me and Steven, if we aren’t rested before we have photos, it’s just harder to be into the idea of having our photos taken because not having a good night of sleep can really make your nerves be on edge the following day!
  3. Leave early! There’s nothing that will stress you out more than running late for your session. Leave yourself PLENTY of time to get there so that you are accounting for things like traffic, getting lost, or even getting pulled over. Running late can also spark some arguments between you and the others in the vehicle and that can definitely be a mood killer!
  4. If you have kids, bring a wrangler with you. This way you can have some extra help carrying things like snacks and extra clothing. Plus this will make it easier for the parents to get some photos alone without having to worry about the kiddos! We did this when we had our family photos taken, and my sister played with Lily in the park while Steven and I had some photos of just the two of us and it was SO nice!
  5. Review the photographer’s work. Show everyone involved some of your favorite blog posts from the photographer you’re working with so that they all know what to expect! I believe that setting expectations can help bring success!
  6. Be yourself. Just be you, and let the photographer handle the rest! You don’t have to worry about a thing there!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
