How to Take Better Photos for the Holiday Card with No Stress

It’s that time of year when everyone is planning and sending out holiday cards. I love to get them and put them up in my archway, and we love to send them (though some years we send them SUPER late, hahah)! We often just take the photo ourselves, and I know a lot of other people do the same! I wanted to share some tips with you to take your photo to the next level!

  1. Bend at the torso. If you bend at the torso (at the hips) and lean forward ever so slightly (it’s super subtle so don’t go too far! haha) you’ll like how you look much better than if you stand straight up, I promise 😉
  2. Use a tripod + timer. You should ALL be in the photo together, so get a tripod, set up the timer (or an interval timer so you can take more than one without having to move) and snap that photo! It’ll be so much easier to set up the photo anywhere you want it if you have a tripod! I use my tripod and timer a  LOT at home with Lily and I!
  3. Be in natural light. If you can be outside – even better! Natural light is always going to look so much nicer in photos than the lights from being inside!
  4. Make sure everyone is touching. This creates such a warm feeling in the photo that everyone loves each other!

These tips will also be great for a family photo on Christmas day or any family gatherings!! 🙂 Get ready to enjoy better photos!

P.S. You know as well I as I do that taking group “selfies” are a lot of fun, but they aren’t always quite the same as having someone else take the photo for you. If you’d like at least one family photo this year that doesn’t include anyone’s arms sticking out of the side of the frame, and you want someone to take it who knows how to make everyone look so damn good (and in focus), here’s an easy way to get one:

Gift a one hour session for $375 – a session plus a 16×24 canvas, a great gift that will let them hang their favorite image in their house right away! 🙂 Shoot me an email and we’ll get you set up!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
