Good Reads | Winter

As we go through life and assume new roles, it’s really easy to stop doing the things that we truly enjoy doing. When I was pregnant with Lily, I often heard from other people about how I wouldn’t be able to do all the things I used to do once baby was born. Reading has always been a HUGE part of who I am, and I was really concerned that once I became a mother that I wouldn’t do that anymore.

Well, I’m grateful for Steven, because he always reminds me of what I want to be and what I want to do. When he notices I’m getting too caught up in my phone or Netflix, or whatever other mindless task, he’ll remind me of the things I want to do instead. Since Lily has been born, I still read VERY regularly, and I’m so so happy about that! I make time for it because it’s really important to me. I also think it’s really good for Lily to see me reading as well.

Anyway. Back to the point of this post – books! It’s been a while since I’ve shared books that I’ve read so here we go!

  • Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – This is my current read and I am LOVING it. It’s a memoir, and I think those have major potential to be boring, but not this!! I adore her writing style, and I am really really enjoying reading about her journey through Italy, India and Indonesia!
  • Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult – Okay, if you don’t already know, Jodi Picoult is probably my most favorite author in the world (besides JK Rowling of course!). This book was INCREDIBLE, and man oh man did it have a wild ending! This was a little different than her normal style of writing because there was no court case involved, but damn she did not disappoint! I can’t wait to read her newest book! Also, you learn a lot of really cool things about elephants 🙂
  • The Help by Kathryn Stockett – I bought this novel a few years ago and just finally got to reading it right before Christmas. It was an excellent book. I was really sad when it ended because I felt like it could’ve been continued. If you are going to read one book this year, this would be it! It gives great insight as to what it was like to be a maid for a wealthy family back when segregation still existed.
  • Save The Date by Mary Kay Andrews – This was a fun book. I read it after Leaving Time, so it was nice to have a book that was predictable but also had some surprises throughout it. It was about a florist, so it was fun to read a book about the wedding industry! I’d like to read some of her other books as well.
  • Do Cool Sh*t by Miki Agrawal – This was an easy read. Her style of writing is great and I loved what she had to say about doing cool shit. It was a great book to read, especially if you’re a business owner. It really shows what can happen when you just do your own thing, and accept that failure is part of the game!
  • Grace, Not Perfection by Emily Ley – Absolutely wonderful. This was in my life right when I needed it. It’s all about dropping this idea of perfection and to stop chasing it and embrace where you’re at right now. It’s also a great advocate for living a simple life, which y’all know I love!

Other books I’ve read recently that are not pictured:

  • The Dexter Series  by Jeff Lindsay – We watched the TV series, so we decided it’d be fun to read the books! They were NOTHING like the tv show, which was nice because then you didn’t know what was going to happen! It took me the better part of 6 months last year to get through all 8 of them.
  • The Zookeeper’s Wife. I couldn’t finish this one. It was really interesting to read but I just couldn’t get through it all. It was too tough to read (not necessarily the content was difficult, I just couldn’t stay invested in it). It’s nonfiction about what it was like during the Holocaust.
  • The Shack by William P. Young – This was really neat to read. I almost liked it better once I knew it was some level of fiction. It really made you think about your spiritual side.
  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – OH. EM. GEE. I loved this! This was not what I was expecting at all!! I’m so glad my friend let me borrow it!!
  • My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman – Such a good book! It’s about a grandmother who leaves letters and tasks for her granddaughter after she’s gone. It’s really sweet and I loved the ending!!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.

I share all things personal, business, tips, and life as a mom and business owner here on the blog!
