Portland, Maine Photographer :: My soapbox

Day 22 – Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel. (a pet peeve, a current event, a controversial topic, something your husband or roommate or neighbor or boss does that really ticks you off)

I missed yesterday’s blog challenge. It’s okay. I’ve learned to not get down on myself about things like that because in a year, it won’t matter that I missed a day, so I don’t feel as bad about stuff like that anymore, which is a huge step for me!

Anyway. Onto today’s rant.

Parents with their cell phones. OH. MY. WORD. It just drives me bonkers. It is so infuriating to see parents who are constantly on their cell phones and doing who knows what instead of playing and talking with their children. Granted, these are just snapshots of their lives and how they are with their children, but they aren’t very good snapshots. They could be totally accurate, or they could be a one in a lifetime fluke.

As someone who is struggling to conceive, it drives me insane to see that some parents are missing on their children’s childhood because their phone is more important. I’ve seen children bring their parents their phone because they left it somewhere, because even they know how “important” it is to them. They’re proud of themselves for bringing it back to said parents. It makes me so angry, and so sad. Children are precious, and they’re only children once.

Pay attention to them while they still want you to. If all they ever see is that playing on your phone is more important than listening to what they have to say, what they want to show you, or what they want to do with you, then they’ll stop coming.

That’s a horrible thing to do to a child.

I know it’s super easy to judge, and I’m not trying to judge at all. I’m just pointing out something I see that drives me absolutely insane.

It’s also super easy to say, “well, when I’m a parent I’ll never do…” and its also easy to criticize parenting styles. I’m hoping that because I feel so strongly about particular aspects of raising a child, that I truly “will never do that.”

I hope.

I just wish society hadn’t evolved like it did, and that electronics and devices – just tangible items with no human connection – weren’t as critical to survival as they are now. Because of this, I try to be very mindful of where I’m placing my priorities and I hope that my children will never see me with a cell phone in my hand all the time, and I hope they never bring it to me and are proud of it.

Not being able to have children with ease has put a lot of things in perspective for me, and I wish that others would realize – in these snapshots that I get of their life – that there is nothing more important than being TOTALLY PRESENT in their children’s lives.

That’s my rant of the day.

What’s yours? 🙂

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
