A Posing Tip for more Intimate Photos!

I’m so happy to say that over the past 8 years, my posing has really evolved. Thank goodness! haha. Sometimes I look back on photos from when I JUST started out and I think to myself, “What the heck was I thinking?!” Oh gosh, but we all live, learn, and grow! Today I wanted to share a posing tip that I LOVE to use when I’m “posing” my couples!

I put posing in quotations because I feel like I mostly give some fun prompts, with the occasional traditional pose. Overall, I like to think that I take a mixed approach! My goal is to make all of my couples FEEL and LOOK their absolute best! 🙂

Which brings me to today’s tip for all you wedding and portrait photographers out there! Back in 2014, I think, I took a workshop with Trevor Dayley, and it was the best! One line that he said has stuck with me to this day:

If you change a digit, you change the whole phone number.

Don’t worry, this will be relevant!

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of us want to achieve some sort of intimate and romantic vibe while photographing our couples. One of the EASIEST ways to achieve that feel is to watch the hands! There should never be “dead hands.” By that, I mean there should never be hands just dangling. They should always have a purpose. All you have to do is change the placement of a hand and it changes the WHOLE look (i.e.”the phone number!”)! Here are a few examples!

Can you see how just changing the placement of a hand changed the whole feel? It made them look more in love and more intimate! And it’s SUCH an easy fix! This is my favorite posing tip to get photos that help showcase the love my couples feel for one another!

I hope that this can be helpful to someone today!!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
