The Lena Cup

Why yes, I am going to write about a menstrual cup today! I don’t feel like there should be “taboo” things to talk about in our culture. It makes me sad that women feel embarrassment, shame, or feel the need to lower their voice if they talk about being on their period. I say to hell with all of that! Today, I want to share about the Lena cup because if ONE person can read this and it changes their life, then it’s all worth it!

I found this image on Google, because I wasn’t about to include a photo of mine – that might’ve been weird! hahah

I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom (PCOS) which is the number one reason we experience fertility issues. I don’t get a regular period, and I haven’t since I was 16 years old. But, now that we live in MA, I’m definitely seeing a shift and the only thing I can think of is that I’ve truly started using 100% non toxic products since we moved here! But anyway, being on my period is always a catch-22. A sigh of relief because at least my body is doing SOMETHING it is supposed to be doing, but also a bummer because, well, being on your period kind of sucks.

Years ago, we were living in Portland and I had heard of a menstrual cup for the first time. I was immediately grossed out by it and dismissed the idea. But honestly? That was because I had a misconception about what it actually was. I never looked it up or researched it.

But these days, more and more women are talking about their periods (which is awesome!). So, I started thinking about the menstrual cup again! I took an online quiz that is called “put a cup in it“. It is so helpful to take a quiz that gives me options to choose from at the end! After talking with a friend and reading reviews I decided to go with the Lena Cup!

Friends, I literally have a happy period now!

Things I love about the Lena Cup:

  • Less waste! I hated how quickly my trash would fill up during my cycle.
  • Cramps are basically nonexistent now.
  • I don’t feel it if it’s inserted properly!
  • It lasts longer than a tampon for me.

Things I didn’t love about the Lena Cup:

  • This is the case for any menstrual cup I think, but there was a MAJOR learning curve. I think it took me two cycles before I finally got the hang of it and figured out the best fold for my body. Also, I definitely YouTube’d videos on any tips or tricks for inserting the cup, because I was ready to give up, and there was actually a super helpful one!

If you want my real opinion, haha, I want everyone to use these now! It’s so nice to not have to worry about carrying extra supplies in my bag. Eventually, I want to get period underwear to have for the lighter days at the start and end of my cycle!

I’ve used the cup in all scenarios: sleeping, working out, swimming, you name it, I’ve done it and it’s been awesome! Seriously can’t speak more highly of these amazing little things! Also, if you’re interested in trying one out and have any questions, feel free to ask me! I’m no expert but I’m happy to share what I know! 🙂

Using the Lena Cup has literally changed my life and I’m SO grateful that one of my friends shared about it on her FB wall last fall!

Awesome!! I tried sponges and a diaphragm but never the cup. It’s not an issue for my now having had a hysterectomy but I love the idea of it!
And I love that you wrote about it!!!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
