James’ First Month

As I type this, James is six weeks old now. SIX weeks! How is that even possible? For time to feel like it’s simultaneously crawling and flying by? I’ve realized that now I’m a mama of two, that these monthly posts are going to look a little bit different. Instead of just commenting on the changes in James, they’ll be a little recap of our lives each month until he reaches one year. Because Lily is a huge part of his life and to not also document that wouldn’t feel right, haha.

So, for James’ first month:

  • He went from 8 lbs 6oz upon being discharged from the hospital to 11 lbs 15 oz at his first well child visit, with all his measurements landing in the 80th-93rd percentiles. He’s a healthy big boy! It still surprises me how big he is, because Steven and I were both small babies when we were born, and so was Lily, haha.
  • James has received the nickname ‘Tank’ from one of his grandfathers and it’s the cutest. Lily also likes to call him “Jamie McAmey.”
  • We had to clip a lip and tongue tie and that was pretty sad, but also necessary.
  • Lily is desperate to change James’ diaper, but I still won’t let her – she’s just not fast enough haha. I’ve lost track of how many times he has peed or pooped with his diaper off. #boys.
  • I’ve seen him smile for real a couple of times now.
  • Steven stayed with us the first two weeks upon coming home from the hospital, and that was super helpful.
  • Lily loves giving James hugs and is always picking him up, which scares the crap out of me, haha.
  • He can roll from his tummy to his back already.
  • He’s a pretty mellow baby, thankfully, and though I’m not getting much sleep, he’s a pretty good sleeper, and we’re getting into a rhythm.
  • We’ve been breastfeeding and that’s been going well.
  • James has started losing hair and that makes me a little sad, haha.
  • He’s already wearing three month clothes, and outgrew anything newborn related within the first two weeks.
  • James met lots of family this month, including his great grammy, and does well on car rides.
  • Lily puts on a lot of concerts for us, and James seems to be totally unphased by loud sounds and loud music.
  • James is super strong, and does really well with tummy time! Lily was the same way!

It’s definitely been a huge adjustment for me to become a single mom to two, but we’re finding our way. I love how much Lily loves James, even though she struggled for a while in the beginning. She loves being a big sister and is the sweetest little helper!

Here are some photos from his first month of life!

You can usually find me adding books to my never-ending “to read” list; challenging myself to do things like not shop for a year; sneaking crispy m+ms from my secret hiding spot so I don’t have to share them with my daughter; and melting over seeing my children smiling at each other.

Oh and I guess I should mention - I’m a seasoned Portland wedding photographer who provides not only kick-ass wedding photos, but also a meaningful and laid-back experience from the time you book to the delivery of your final images.
